It may have grown big enough that this year it moved from Francis Avenue Park to Sims Park, the hub of downtown activity, but Dell deChant said the annual Florida Loquat Festival will always be local and always be about creating community through local, sustainable agriculture.
Gone Juicing, one of downtown New Port Richey's newest businesses, is proud to support local farmers and features locally harvested produts in their shop. Sunday is a general work day for members of Grand Gardens where recent chores included surveying what needed to be cleared for fall planting and painting an old wooden picnic table that serves as a gathering spot for those attending workshops and events.

One of the first customers at the Collard Green Festival at Grand Gardens in New Port Richey on Jan. 7 was the city’s mayor, Rob Marlowe, who said he came because “my wife likes collard greens.” Marlowe was also there to show support for the community garden, which hosts nearly 30 plots where residents can grow organic, chemical-free produce.
Believe it or not, it is not too late to start a summer garden. Yes, it is abnormally hot, and vegetable gardening might be challenging, offering some rather slim pickings compared to what you can grow in the lusher winter months.
But it’s not impossible.
